Why do longer focal lengths magnify images?
The magnification of a telescope is the focal length of the objective lens divided by the focal length of the eyepiece. If the objective lens has a longer focal length it'll give more magnification *with the same eyepieces*. In practice you select the magnification by choosing a suitable eyepiece.
